SUMMARY
 

An 11-day/10-night hiking and cultural tour for small groups of 4 to 7 people in Northern Greece. Visit historic cities like Thessaloniki and Corfu, as well as cultural landmarks such as the UNESCO-listed Meteora "floating" monasteries. Hike through the Zagorochoria, the traditional villages of the Zagori Cultural Landscape, connected by arched bridges and cobbled paths. Cross the spectacular Vikos Gorge. Enjoy panoramic views from the summit of Corfu, overlooking the Greek and Albanian coasts. Highlight of the trip: the ascent of Mount Olympus, highest mountain in Greece and mythical home of the Greek gods.

ITINERARY


Day 1 – Welcome to Greece!
Arrival in Thessaloniki. Transfer to the hotel. Depending on your arrival time, free time to explore the city. 2 nights in Thessaloniki

Day 2 – Thessaloniki, Mount Chortiatis
Transfer to the village of Chortiatis, located at the foot of Mount Chortiatis, Thessaloniki's local mountain. Our hike to the refuge and the Kolosourtis summit (1089m) begins at the memorial for a tragic event from World War II. We follow the "ice makers path," once used by villagers to reach the coldest spots on the mountain and freeze water. They sold this ice in Thessaloniki, in a time before electric refrigerators. We hike through a dense beech forest. We reach a north-facing viewpoint overlooking Lake Koroni. From the summit, there is a panoramic view southward over Thessaloniki and the Thermaic Gulf.

Day 3 – Thessaloniki, the capital of the north. Mount Olympus: at the Spilios Agapitos refuge
Visit Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece after Athens, founded by Cassander of Macedon and named in honor of his wife, Thessalonike, daughter of Philip II of Macedon and sister of Alexander the Great. Discover the Byzantine city walls, the Acropolis, the Arch and Rotunda of Galerius, and the Basilica of Saint Demetrius. Continue your walk to the Ancient Agora, the Church of Agia Sofia, and other monuments. Transfer via Litochoro to Prionia at the foot of Mount Olympus, at an altitude of 1,100 meters, where the road ends. Hike through the "Wood of Silence" located in the Enipeus Gorge towards the Spilios Agapitos refuge, at 2,100m altitude. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

Day 4 – Hiking to the Mountain of the Gods: Ascent of Mount Olympus (Skolio, 2905m)
Early departure from the refuge to climb to the summit of Skolio, 2905m. We first cross through the forest, then a rocky area with low, sparse vegetation. Magnificent panoramic views of the other peaks and the sea. Weather permitting, we may even see the Mount Athos peninsula. (To climb Mytikas, 2918m, there is a climbing section, and you must be properly equipped for your safety: harnesses, carabiners, and a climbing rope of about 100m are required). Return to the refuge and descent to Prionia. Transfer to Kastraki at the foot of Meteora. Check-in for two nights in Kastraki.

Day 5 – Meteora, the “floating” Monasteries
"Meteora" means "suspended in the air, floating in the sky." Departure on foot directly from the hotel to the Byzantine monasteries of Meteora, which seem to float between the plain and the sky. Some are decorated with magnificent frescoes. We will discover two of them before descending between the rock pinnacles to the village of Kastraki. In the afternoon, you can climb to the summit of the impressive rock of Agio Pnevma (“Holy Spirit”) located above Kastraki, or walk to the viewpoint at Marmaro Rock, which offers the most beautiful view of Kastraki.

Day 6 – Zagori, the “Land behind the Mountains”
Departure for the Pindus Mountains. Short break and visit to the village of Metsovo, center of the Greek Vlachs, located at 1160m altitude and facing the majestic Mount Peristeri. We reach the Pindus National Park and the Zagori region, famous for its stone and slate villages, connected by cobbled paths and arched bridges. Hike along the wooded slopes and through the upper reaches of the Vikos River, from the village of Kipi via Vitsa to Monodendri. Depending on the arrival time, a walk through the traditional village to the chapel of Agia Paraskevi, offering a panoramic view of the Vikos Gorge. 2 nights in Monodendri

Day 7 – Vikos Gorge: The deepest canyon in the world?
Hike through the magnificent, tree-shaded Vikos Gorge, part of the Vikos-Aoos National Park, to the village of the same name. The Vikos Gorge, 20km long, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the deepest canyon in the world by width. The main section of the gorge stretches between the villages of Vikos and Monodendri and reaches a depth of approximately 1000m.

Day 8 – Ioannina, a lakeside city. Ferry crossing to Corfu
Transfer to Ioannina, the administrative capital of Epirus. Around 1800, Ioannina was the capital of the legendary Ali Pasha: we will discover his tomb in the castle on the shores of Lake Pamvotis, as well as the two mosques overlooking the lake. By boat, we will visit the island where Ali Pasha was assassinated, in the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon. We will explore the church of the Philanthropinon Monastery and admire its rich murals, some of which depict Greek philosophers. A short hike around the island is possible. Day 9 – Mount Pantokrator: Ascent to Corfu's highest mountain
Transfer to Spartylas, at 340m altitude, and ascent of Mount Pantokrator. We cross the picturesque village and take a scenic path along shrub-covered slopes. We pass the ruins of an abandoned monastery, cross a laurel forest, and reach the large rocky plateau of Mt Pantokrator. Finally, we reach the summit at 911m, where the monastery is located. Panoramic views of the mountains and coasts of mainland Greece and Albania. Return to Spartylas via an alternative route. Free time in the afternoon.

Day 10 – Kerkyra, the island's capital
Visit Corfu Town, the island's capital, with approximately three millennia of history. Each era has left its mark. The old town, with its two fortresses, is marked by its Venetian character. On the esplanade, the Liston building with its arcades recalls the period of French administration. The green cricket pitch is emblematic of the British period. In the Archaeological Museum, you'll find the splendid Gorgo pediment from a temple of Artemis. The beautiful Church of Saints Jason and Sosipatros dates from the medieval-Byzantine era. The Kanoni district is located on the hill of the ancient acropolis, offering breathtaking views of Pontikonisi ("Mouse Island"). And at the foot of the Acropolis, in the Palaiopolis district ("Old City"), within a large garden of lush vegetation, lies the royal villa "Mon Repos" and two ancient sanctuaries. Free time in the afternoon.

HIKING

- This trip is not necessarily for professional athletes, but for hikers who are reasonably fit and in good physical condition.
- Necessary equipment: hiking boots, hiking poles, day-pack, waterproof jacket; sleeping bag liner, headlamp, a pair of slippers and some warm clothes (for the night in the mountain hut); long trousers for men and a skirt or dress for women (for visiting the monasteries); a food container and a cup (for picnics); individual pharmacy

LUGGAGE TRANSPORT
- During the hike, each participant carries a small day-pack containing the necessary items for the day. The rest of your belongings will be left at the hotel or transported by the vehicle and/or boat reserved for the group, depending on the day.
- On the day of your stay at the mountain hut, you must bring your overnight gear.
