For about one week you explore the island of Ithaca; a beautiful island in the Ionian Sea, ideal for calm vacations and unforgettable walking tours. Sparsely populated, not easily accessible and without its own airport, Ithaca is not a place where you happen to arrive. It is the ideal destination for travelers who seek for peaceful walking holidays. Ithaca is divided by an isthmus into two roughly equal parts. Vathi; its main town, is located on a deep bay at the north of the southern part, opposite Neriton; the highest mountain of the island. You hike through spectacular landscapes, passing by picturesque villages and you enjoy swimming in the emerald sea, on an island bonded to the legend of Ulysses. Odysseus; the legendary king of Ithaca who, after the ten-year Trojan war, he wandered around for another ten years before reaching Ithaca; refusing the love of a goddess (Kalypso) and the gift of immortality, convinced that “there is nothing on earth sweeter than homeland”. Although it seems small and poor to recent scholars, Ithaca makes the main claim about being the homeland of legendary Odysseus: “I am Odysseus, Laertes’ son... Ithaca’s sunny hills are my home...” are the literal words in the Odyssey. Konstantin Kavafis wrote: “As you set out for Ithaca / I hope your road is long, full of adventure, full of discovery. / … not expecting Ithaca to make you rich. / Ithaca gave you the marvelous journey...” Even if Ithaca will not give you any material wealth, you will eventually be rich in unforgettable impressions and reluctant to leave this legendary island…

In the small local archaeological museum, an ostracon (piece of pottery) with the dedicatory inscription for Odysseus; found in a neighboring sacred cave, is exhibited. This, it is cited as an important argument for the identity of present-day and Mycenaean Ithaca. You go hiking on old, partly paved paths to the “School of Homer” and you continue up to the village of Exogi; located in panoramic position, high above the bay of Afales. On a scenic mountain path over the Roussanou peninsula, you walk back to Stavros. It is also possible to make a detour down to the bay of Polis, possible location of the harbor of the Homeric town.
