This is a walking and culture tour starts from and ends to Thessaloniki; the "co-capital" of Greece. For 8 days we travel through Macedonia and Thessaly, through beautiful landscapes and picturesque towns, to historical sites and natural reserves of the North. We climb Olympus; the highest mountain of Greece, we traverse the gorge of Enippeas, we visit the royal tombs of Vergina and the Meteora monasteries; walking in a scenery of extreem beauty between the huge rocks. Eventually, we travel to Chalcidice; where we will also have time to explore the small inhabited island of Ammouliani and have the opportunity of a boat trip round the Mt. Athos peninsula.


Day 1: Welcome in Northern Greece

Today you meet your tour leader in Thessaloniki. 1 overnight in Thessaloniki.

Day 2: Thessaloniki and Vergina. Trip to Meteora

After breakfast we go for a sightseeing cultural walk in Thessaloniki; the main city of Northern Greece. Afterwards we drive to Vergina to visit the archeological site of Aigai; Ancient Macedonians' capital with the tomb of Philip II, which is been transformed in a museum where all priceless finds are exhibited in situ. We travel southwards and we eventually arrive in Kastraki; a picturesqu town at the feet of the Meteors. 2 overnights in Kastraki.

Day 3: Explore the Meteora

This day we explore the area of Meteora; hiking in a breathtaking scenery between the impressive gigant rocks, and visiting two of the monasteries "floating" between earth and sky. A circular walk from/to the village of Kastraki (about +300m/-300m, 4h, moderate).

Day 4: Last explorations in Meteora. Travel to Mt. Olympus

In the morning we visit the monastery of Agia Triada and walk down to Kalabaka (about +50m/-250m, 1h15min, simple). In the afternoon, we cross the plain of Thessaly, then the narrow valley of Tempi between mountains Olympus and Ossa and via the town of Litochoro; at the foothills of Olympus Mountain we get at Prionia; at 1040 m high, in the National Park, at the east slopes of the Mountain of the Gods. We hike through the "Forest of Silence" at the upper part of Enippeas gorge towards the mountain refuge "Spilios Agapitos", at 2100 m (+1050 m, 3h30min, moderate). Diner and overnight in the hut.

Day 5: Climbing Mt. Olympus

Early in the morning we climb the peak Skolio, at 2912m, with panoramic view to the other peaks of Mt. Olympus, the sea and even to Mt. Athos; under favorable weather conditions. We return to the refuge and we eventually to Prionia (+850 m/-1870 m, 8 h, moderate-demanding). In case of adverse weather conditions, we do an alternative, through less demanding, hike with panoramic view and then walk down to Prionia. In the afternoon, swimming in the sea is possible at the beach of Litochoro. Overnight in Litochoro or Paleos Panteleimon.

Day 6: Through Enippeas' Gorge. Trip to Chalcidice

After breakfast, we get transfered to Prionia and then we hike through the stunning beauty of the shadowed peaceful gorge of Enippeas, towards the village of Litochoro (9 km, +150 m/-900 m, 5 h, moderate). In the afternoon, we travel towards Chalcidice and Mt. Athos "leg". 2 overnights in Ouranoupolis.

Day 7: Ammouliani; an inhabited island

In the morning we visit the small inhabited green island of Ammouliani (about 15 min by ferry) and walk through peaceful sandy beaches and points of panoramic view (about 7 km, ±150m, 2h, simple). Swimming stop always possible. The afternoon is at leisure. Optional boat excursion around Mt. Athos.

Day 8: Farewell

Today this beautiful adventure in Northern Greece ends and we return to Thessaloniki (Ouranoupolis-Thessaloniki Airport: about 133 km, 1h45min). Farewell or next adventure!

Not intended for professional athletes though a good shape is required.
Equipment: hiking shoes, hiking sticks (very useful), day backpack, raincoat.
