This is a 10-days walking holiday, where you will explore two of the most attractive Cycladic islands, visiting their major attractions and discover their hidden gems whilst you will get initiated to the local culture. Naxos; island of Dionysus and Ariadne, is the larger of the Cyclades with a mountainous inland, which includes the higher pick of the Cycladic islands, yet with beautiful vast sandy exotic coasts. Amorgos; the island of the “Big Blue”, is one of the most impressive Cycladic islands at the edge of the Archipelago, with its scenic ancient footpaths leading through its rough rocky landscape with spectacular view to the sparkling blue of the Aegean Sea. Both islands; inhabited since the Protocycladic era, are rich in history and tradition, something that you will experience during this unforgettable adventure.


Day 1: Welcome to the Cyclades!

Today at the port of Piraeus you will meet your Tour Leader and take the ferry to the islands. After about 5h you arrive at Naxos. Check in to your hotel. Depending on the arrival time, first orientation walk to the city or the beach for a refreshing swim or a drink before dinner. 4 overnights in Chora/Agios Georgios.

Day 2: Walking through the countryside in the center of Naxos

Transfer to Chalki. After visiting this picturesque village, you go hiking through Tsingalario and Pano Potamia to Kourounochori. Near Tsingalario you visit the ruins of a medieval fortress and in Pano Potamia you have your lunch pose in the shady courtyard of a traditional tavern. At Flerio, near the ancient marble quarries, you will make a short visit to an unfinished archaic statue (kouros of Flerio) from the 6th century B.C. You eventually arrive at Kourounochori, where this beautiful hike ends. Transfer to the hotel.

Day 3: Climbing the highest peak of the Cyclades

The day’s hike starts from the lively mountainous village of Filoti; at an altitude of 400m. You walk first to the cave of Zas; on the west slopes of Mt. Zas and then you continue uphill to the peak of Mt. Zas; at 1001m. This is the highest point of the Cycladic Islands and the view is amazing! You hike down through the north slopes to the chapel of Agia Marina and you eventually return to Filoti. Lunch or coffee pose. Transfer to the hotel.
Hiking: 9 km, + 730m / - 730m, 4h, moderate

Day 4: The north of Naxos

Through the mountainous inland you travel to Komiaki; on the slopes of Mt. Koronos. On an old panoramic footpath, you walk downhill towards Apollon; a small fishing village built in a cove near the northernmost point of Naxos Island. Under favorable weather conditions, you can even see the island of Ikaria, where according to the myth, Icarus lost his wings and fell into the Icarian Sea. Very close to the village, another unfinished archaic statue (kouros of Apollon) from the 6th century B.C, lies in an ancient marble quarry. There will be time for lunch and swimming, before returning to the hotel via a spectacular road along the North West coast.

Day 5: Farewell to Naxos! Trip to Amorgos

The morning is at leisure for your last explorations in Chora of Naxos. Around noon you take the ferry to Amorgos and late in the afternoon, you arrive at Katapola; the southernmost of the two ports of Amorgos. Check in at your hotel. 5 overnights in Katapola of Amorgos.

Day 6: The picturesque Chora of Amorgos. Hiking to Mt. Profitis Ilias

After breakfast you take the bus to Chora of Amorgos; the picturesque capital of the island and one of the most beautiful of the Aegean Sea. You hike towards the chapel of Prophet Elias on the peak of homonymous mountain overlooking Chora; at 702 m. You take your time to enjoy the breathtaking view to the wild cliffs of the steep south-east coast and the stunning blue of the Aegean Sea, before walking down the same path. Lunch break in one of the traditional taverns, you explore at your pace this beautiful typical Cycladic settlements, with its cubic whitewashed houses, many churches and chapels, its Venetian fortress and its windmills. In the afternoon you take the old paved path and walk down to Katapola.

Day 7: Spectacular hike along the “spine” of the island. The Monastery of Chozoviotissa and Egiali

Today you walk on the old trail that used to connect the capital of Amorgos to the port of Egiali. First you visit the Monastery of Chozoviotissa; a major byzantine monument founded in the 11th century, an impressive building literally nested in the cliffs high above the sea, with spectacular view of the sparkling blue waters. You walk on a scenic path with stunning view to both the south-east and the north-west coast, passing through abandoned and inhabited villages to arrive eventually at the bay of Egiali. Time to stroll through the village, swim and relax by the sandy beach even have a refreshing drink before taking the bus back to Katapola.

Day 8: Walking southwards to the ancient cities of Minoa and Arkesini

Today your hike starts right from the hotel. Katapola was the harbor of Minoa; one of the three independent cities of the island during the antiquity; the others were Egiali in the north and Arkesine in the south. You walk towards the acropolis of ancient Minoa on the hill above Katapola, with magnificent view. You continue to the south, partially following old paved trails, until you reach the church of Panagia Kastrini; built on the ruins of a medieval fortress, in the hill of the acropolis of ancient Arkesine. You take your time to visit the site and admire the breathtaking view to the sea and the north-west coast. You continue the hike towards the village of Vroutsi. Lunch stop possible there before taking the bus back to Katapola.
Hiking: 11 km, +1000m/-750m, 4h30 min, demanding

Day 9: The unique landscapes of the north

Today you will explore the northern part of Amorgos Island. After breakfast you take the bus to the traditional village of Tholaria. You walk through picturesque villages, along paved old connection paths and through impressive solitary landscapes towards the church of Panagia Epanochoriani, the monastery of St. John Theologos and the chapel of Stavros. You are in a transcendental place; you hike high above the sea and over the cliffs of the vertical north-east coast, on the slopes of the highest mountain of Amorgos. Eventually, through the beautiful village of Lagada, you reach Egiali from where, later you take the bus to Katapola.

Day 10: Farewell!

Today this magnificent hiking experience to the Cyclades ends. Ferry to Piraeus or next adventure to the Greek Islands.
