During this 2-day tour you will explore a fantastic mountainous area in the center of the Peloponnese; a unified natural, cultural and historical space, which has inspired European art and literature over the centuries. “Et in Arcadia ego”. You will visit the medieval village of Karytaina. You will hike through the spectacular canyon of Lousios river, from Stemnitsa to Dimitsana; the so-called stone jewels of Arcadia. You will travel through the intact nature and visit beautiful picturesque villages; built in an average altitude of 1000m, in the slopes of Mainalon Mountain.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Travel to the Peloponnese. Visit of Karytaina

You leave Athens and travel to the Peloponnese, towards the mountainous area of Arcadia. You reach the medieval village of Karytaina; amfitheatrikally built on a hill with a castle on its peak. You take your time to visit the place. You continue towards Stemnitsa; a traditional village overlooking the gorge of Lousios River, at an altitude of 1080m, built on the site of the ancient Arcadian city of Hypsous. Overnight.

Day 2: Hiking Lousios Gorge

Today you hike through Lousios Gorge! After breakfast, you leave the traditional settlement of Stemnitsa and walking on an old mule path we enter the spectacular gorge. We continue our hike on the old connection path, passing by the Monasteries of Prodromos and Philossophou; impressively built against the vertical cliffs, we pass the open-air hydropower museum and we arrive at Dimitsana; a picturesque historical town at the opposite side of the canyon of Lousios River. You will have time to visit Dimitsana and have lunch, before leaving taking the road back to Athens, travelling through the beautiful landscapes of Mt. Mainalon and its picturesque villages.
