The Cyclades archipelago consists of 33 islands (26 of which are inhabited) and countless rocky islets located in the middle of the Aegean Sea, south of Attica and Evia, north of Crete. Santorini is the southernmost of the Cyclades: An active volcano, eroded rock formations, vineyards, colorful beaches, medieval villages, excavations from different periods and a Museum of Prehistoric Art. The island was once called "Thera", but also "Strongyle" (= The Round) and especially "Kalliste" (= The Most Beautiful); it's easy to understand why as you move from one natural wonder to another. Naxos, large and prosperous, the island of Dionysus and Ariadne, is the largest of the Cyclades. It has played a leading role since ancient times, and in the Middle Ages it became the center of the Venetian Duchy of the Archipelago. You will discover its mountainous interior which includes the highest peak of the Cyclades and you will enjoy its beautiful beaches. Delos was considered the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis.
